A group of final year acting students are set to perform Little Women for Preston audiences.

The cast from the University of Lancashire will bring the original stage adaptation of the beautiful and beloved Louisa May Alcott story to St Peter’s Arts Centre next week.

The tale introduces the four March sisters as they navigate the perils of growing up amidst the backdrop of the American Civil War. The story follows tomboy Jo, beautiful Meg, shy Beth, and spoilt Amy as they move from childhood to adulthood.

Alcott introduced readers to authentic female-led stories, making waves in American literature. She remained an activist all her life and played a role in abolitionism and women’s suffrage, which reflects through the autobiographical Little Women.

One of the students, Alex Franz, told Blog Preston: “Little Women is known for its pioneering portrayal of female ambition, defying the gender roles of the time and inspiring many future works. With themes of family, selflessness and generosity, the story is heavily relatable during the upcoming Christmas period, making this the perfect festive theatre performance.

“This moving adaptation by the cast of third year actors explores Alcott’s timeless tale, showing it to be as relevant today as it was when first written. A story that doesn’t avoid dealing with life’s hardships and storms, but one in which women are the heroes of their own story.”
