A multi-disciplinary exhibition is coming to SHOP Preston.
Artist Rachel Shephard’s show will feature a combination of screen prints, stone lithograph, photopolymer, paintings and sculpture.
Rachel, who lives in Cumbria, completed an MA in Fine Art at the University of Lancashire in 2024 and was subsequently awarded a fellowship at Artlab Contemporary Print Studio.
We caught up with Rachel to find out more.
Tell us more about the exhibition.
The exhibition is titled A Delicate Balance and brings together the work I’ve completed at ArtLab.
It starts on Friday 5 December at 5pm with mulled wine and mince pies and will be open on Saturday 6 December from 11am to 4pm. A window display will remain in place for a week.
Who and what inspires you?
I’m inspired by many different artists all the time, but I love Helen Chadwick’s work.
I’ve always been interested in the tension that is found between opposites – strength and fragility, light and shadow, experience and memory, conscious and unconscious. My work is an exploration of the line and balance in-between.

What is your process for creating art?
My practice is research and concept led with the methods and materials selected to best convey what I am hoping to communicate.
I often create images in the landscape – these are turned into prints and form part record of performance/part landscape. The natural and human are combined and tested to explore the tensions and boundaries that inspire my work.
What do you enjoy about being an artist?
Art brings everything together, churns it up and creates something new – it’s a way to be constantly intrigued and engaged with the world.
How do you find the scene here in Preston?
Preston has a great creative scene, which manages to be both exciting and innovative while also welcoming. It’s a great place to be as an artist.
