A new R1-billion amusement park is coming to the Durban Beachfront.

It will be built on the old Durban FunWorld site.

During a media briefing earlier Wednesday, eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba announced the successful bidder for the project.

Xaba says construction is expected to be completed by 2027. The development will create about 1 500 jobs, including 500 permanent positions.

He says the establishment forms part of the city’s plan to boost its tourism offerings and encourage visitors to stay longer in Durban.

“The site we are redeveloping occupies a prime position and its transformation is an integral part of the city’s long-term strategy to revitalize the beachfront economy, attract private investment and strengthen Durban’s position as Africa’s leading coastal tourism destination. We are pleased that the project has reached a key milestone with the receipt of formal expression of interest from three development funding institutions. This demonstrates strong institutional appetite for the project and confirms alignment with national priorities for tourism growth.”
