A free swimming campaign in Preston has been funded to encourage more people to take part in swim sessions.
The funding, which was confirmed at an October Preston City Council meeting, will ensure local people have the chance to benefit mentally and physically from being active.
A total of £95,000 in funding has been given to support the delivery of the programme as part of the city’s Labour-led administration’s cost of living package.
The campaign consists of a variety of offers, with free swimming sessions being universally available for all under 18’s at Fulwood and West View leisure centres operated by Better Leisure.

Councillor Zafar Coupland, cabinet member for health and wellbeing at Preston City Council, said: “We’re proud to introduce Free Swimming as part of Preston City Council recent cost-of-living support measures.
“By removing financial barriers, we aim to make this opportunity accessible to everyone in our community, regardless of circumstance.”
“I would like to express my thanks to GLL and our dedicated council officers for their hard work and collaboration in bringing this initiative to life.
“Together, we’re helping residents stay healthy and connected during challenging times.”
The campaign will also bring free swimming lessons, and free junior membership will also be available for children receiving free school meals.
Adults from low-income households, adults with a disability, seniors and parents on maternity and paternity leave will also be eligible for free swimming sessions.
The campaign will run until 31st March 2026 at GLL “Better” Preston brands.
