Rosemere scanner donation to reduce discomfort for cancer patents in clinical trials

A vein finding ultrasound scanner has been funded to help Royal Preston Hospital based research staff.

Funded by Rosemere Cancer Foundation, the scanner will be in daily use and will retain and treat cancer patients who have volunteered to take part in clinical trials of new medicines.

Requested by senior research charge nurse Allan Brown, he said: “The majority of cancer trials are early phases of new and experimental medicines that may go on to become the treatments of the future.

“But in most cases, patients with cancers that are not responding well to current treatment or that have spread from their original site to another part of the body.”

Allan added: “If we are unable to take blood samples or access veins, this can lead to delays, postponement of therapy and extra visits to the centre, as well as increased patient discomfort.”

“By using the ultrasound scanner to painlessly identify good veins, we can better overcome these issues, helping us to recruit and retain patients as well as improve their overall trial experience. We are very grateful to Rosemere Cancer Foundation for the scanner.”

Costing £2055.83, the scanner will also reduce the need for patients to withdraw prematurely from future trials.
