As winter approaches, pupils at St Mark’s Catholic Primary School have been brightening their community with a series of thoughtful initiatives.

From tackling hunger and supporting those affected by the cold, to raising money for charity, the children have been actively making a difference through their compassionate campaigns.

Led by our Mini Vinnies charity campaigners, St Mark’s annual Coat Drive saw 300 winter coats collected for those in need this year, substantially topping last year’s figure of 200.

“Each year our Mini Vinnies run a Coat Drive, collecting clean coats for children and adults from families, friends, and parishioners,” said Melanie Henderson, Deputy Headteacher at our school, which is part of the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust.

“These are shared with the St Vincent de Paul Centre in Byker, Fareshare in Westerhope, and families within our own community.”

Alongside this, St Mark’s Go Canny Campaign asked families and members of the community for food bank donations, while a Macmillan Coffee Morning event at the school raised an impressive amount for the charity – thanks to a tasty twist.

“Our Bake Off was a fantastic addition, even without Paul Hollywood,” added Mrs Henderson.

“We had incredible cakes, scones, meringues, cheesecakes, and savoury bakes entered.

“Between the Bake Off, raffle, and cake sales, we’re thrilled to share that we raised an amazing £500 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

“Thank you to everyone who came along, baked, donated, and joined in the fun.”
