Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman has been named in the Africa Cup of Nations group stage best XI at the 2025 tournament in Morocco.
The 28 year old was the only Nigerian selected in the team of standout performers released by the Confederation of African Football on Friday.
Lookman delivered an impressive display during the group phase, scoring 2 goals and providing 2 assists as Nigeria secured maximum 9 points from 3 matches in Group C to reach the round of 16.
The Atalanta forward scored the winning goal in Nigeria’s opening match against Tanzania before adding a superb third goal in the victory over Tunisia.
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle was also recognised as the best coach of the group stage following Nigeria’s dominant performances.
Hosts Morocco had 2 players included in the best XI, with Brahim Diaz and Noussair Mazraoui making the list. Cote d’Ivoire’s Amad Diallo led the attack alongside Senegal’s Sadio Mane and Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez.
Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy was selected between the posts, while Cameroon’s Carlos Baleba, Congo DR’s Axel Tuanzebe, Tunisia’s Ali Abdi and Burkina Faso defender Edmond Tapsoba completed the line up.
The knockout stage of the 2025 AFCON begins on December 3, with Nigeria set to face Mozambique on December 5.

<h2>Former presidential aide, Okoi Obono-Obla, has reacted to the impeachment travails of the Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, saying the Office of Deputy Governor in Nigeria should be abolished.</h2>
<p><strong>Naija News</strong> reported that the <a href="https://www.naijanews.com/2024/04/04/impeachment-shaibu-leaked-govt-secret-committed-perjury-assembly-tells-panel/">Edo State House of Assembly had accused Shaibu of leaking government secrets</a> and committing perjury.</p>
<p>The Assembly noted that the allegations against Shaibu were impeachable offences.</p>
<p>Reacting, Obono-Obla expressed concern for Shaibu and stressed that the office of the Deputy Governor requires amendment or abolishment.</p>
<p>According to him, to reduce the cost of governance, the Speaker of State Houses of Assembly should succeed or stand in for governors in the event of death, resignation or removal from office.</p>
<p>He explained that since the advent of democratic civil rule in the country, deputy governors have been the targets of imperialistic and despotic governors' actions.</p>
<p>Obono-Obla noted that impeachment is a serious matter and warned that it must not be used to blackmail deputy governors.</p>
<p>He said, <em>"I feel sorry for the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Honourable Philip Shuiabu.</em></p>
<p><em>"I think the position of Deputy Governor should be abolished by the Constitution. The Speaker of the State House of Assembly should succeed any State Governor.</em></p>
<p><em>"This would require a constitutional amendment or alteration abolishing the position of Deputy Governor."</em></p>
<p><em>"As a result, impeachment procedure is always dangling on the hands of deputy governors like the sword of damocles."</em></p>
