The film awards season is in full swing, and the finishing line is now in sight, with all eyes now on the biggest prize, the 98th Academy Awards. The Oscar nominations are in (Thursday, January 22), and there are already plenty of winners and losers ahead of the biggest day in Hollywood, with US comedian Conan O’Brien returning to host this year’s s ceremony on Sunday, March 15

Who are the winners?

This year’s biggest winner has to be the record-breaking ‘Sinners’, receiving 16 nominations (and beating the record set by ‘All About Eve’, ‘Titanic’ and ‘La La Land’). Ryan Coogler received nods with Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay, and Michael B. Jordan is up for Best Actor.

Meanwhile, ‘One Battle After Another’, from acclaimed director Paul Thomas Anderson—including nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor nods to its stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Benicio Del Toro, Sean Penn, and Teyana Taylor—has 12 nominations. Other strong performers include Joachim Trier’s ‘Sentimental Value’ (9) and Josh Safdie’s ‘Marty Supreme’ (8)

Elsewhere, Jessie Buckley (‘Hamnet’) already has one hand on Best Actress, and the mega-streaming hit, ‘KPop Demon Hunters’, is up for Best Animated Feature. We also saw the first-ever nominations for Elle Fanning in ‘Sentimental Value’ (Actress in a Supporting Role) and Jacob Elordi in ‘Frankenstein’ (Actor in a Supporting Role), and the only nomination for a British actor was Wunmi Mosaku, nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, for ‘Sinners’.

Who are the losers?

One of the biggest films of last year, ‘Wicked: For Good’ didn’t get a single nomination, while the Dwayne Johnson-starring ‘The Smashing Machine’ only picked up a nod Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Others to miss out include Julia Roberts’ ‘After The Hunt’, George Clooney’s ‘Jay Kelly’, Jennifer Lawrence’s ‘Die My Love’ and Sydney Sweeney’s ‘Christy’

What’s new at the Oscars?

Casting directors have long been the unsung heroes of Hollywood. Without them, many movies wouldn’t have that unforgettable chemistry between actors that just work together. In the first new Oscar category since Best Animated Feature Film in 2001, the Academy Award for Best Casting now recognises this talent—with movie nominations:

The new award brings the total number of competitive Oscar categories to 24, but it’s not the only change this year. A new rule change means that Academy members have to actually watch the movies before they vote on them… Either through an official streaming service, or they can say which cinema screening they went to.
