Heavy rain and winds will continue in Preston and the surrounding area until around midday.

That is the verdict from the Met Office who have issued warnings for much of the UK – including on the hills in East Lancashire – but not for Preston.

Preston is experiencing wind gusts of up to 46mph and will have seen around 15mm of rain in 12 hours by midday on Tuesday (27 January).

It comes from a deep area of low pressure which has been formally named as Storm Chandra. As has been the case for much of winter, the worst of the weather was forecast to miss Preston.

There are no flood alerts in place in Lancashire.

There are severe delays on the M61 and M6 heading northbound on Tuesday morning.

Paul Gundersen, chief forecaster for the Met Office, said: “Storm Chandra will bring a range of hazards to the UK through Monday night and Tuesday. Initially strong winds will impact the Isles of Scilly, western Cornwall and southwest Wales which are still vulnerable after Storm Goretti, gusts of 70 to 80mph are possible here. Heavy rain is an additional hazard as it falls on saturated ground in Dorset and southern parts of Devon, Somerset and Cornwall.

“As Chandra interacts with colder air further north snow becomes a hazard, with 10-20cm of snow possibly accumulating over higher ground in the Pennines, southern Scotland and the Highlands. With a complex spell of weather, its important people stay up to date with the forecast and any warnings in your area.”
