A new café is set to launch in Preston to offer a supportive space for those affected by communication difficulties.

Located at Deepdale Football Stadium’s Gentry Bar, the initiative aims to help people living with Aphasia, a condition that affects a person’s ability to speak, read, and write.

Delivered by charity Aphasia Support and championed by local residents Lucy Park, Margery Regan and Janet Cain, it will provide a space where those living with the disability can connect and understand each other.

James Major, CEO of Aphasia Support, said: “We are so grateful for the outpouring of support we have received from the local community. The Preston Aphasia Café is a much-needed space where people affected by aphasia can feel understood, supported, and connected.

“Thanks to the dedication of local champions and valuable input from residents, we are proud to launch a new service which offers long-term support in the heart of the community.”

Often affecting people following a stroke, the disability can impact daily life and independence.

The café will help tackle this by being led by a qualified Speech and Language therapist and supported by fully trained volunteers.

It is set to launch on 14 January and is encouraging people to join the group.

Jo, a former nurse who attends one of Aphasia Support’s existing groups, said: “It’s such a fantastic help. It’s the best thing. Friendships, love, and support – that is how it is. When I first came, I couldn’t say anything. The group has helped me get better and better and better.”
