Death of student, 19, at University of Lancashire now a murder investigation

The death of a University of Lancashire student on the Preston campus has become a murder investigation.

Carla Georgescu, 19, was found dead inside the Ribble Hall accommodation in Victoria Street on Thursday (5 February) afternoon.

During Saturday (7 February) forensic officers and police were seen examining the area around the student accommodation.

Lancashire Police have confirmed to Blog Preston a 34-year-old man has now been arrested on suspicion of murder.

The man, from Hartlepool, was known to the student and no one else is currently being sought in connection with the investigation into Carla’s death.

A police spokesperson said: “Our thoughts are with her loved ones at this time.

“An investigation is underway into the circumstances surrounding her death, which is currently being treated as suspicious.

“We have also been out and about in the streets around the university carrying out house-to-house and CCTV enquiries in the area and conducting some searches, including the use of police dogs and our drone.

“We know that news of this young woman’s death and the police activity will be concerning to many, but we want to tell you that we have a team of detectives and uniformed officers working hard to try and establish the circumstances.”

Lancashire Police told Blog Preston while an arrest had been made on suspicion of murder they were continuing to explore all circumstances in relation to the young woman’s death. Anyone with information is asked to approach an officer around the university campus, where patrols remain, or call 101 quoting log 0560 of Feb 5th

The University of Lancashire confirmed Carla, 19, had been studying at the university. Blog Preston understands she was from Hartlepool and was in the second year of her studies.

A University of Lancashire spokesperson said: “We are all deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of our students.   

“The University is aware that a 34-year-old man from Hartlepool, unconnected with the university but known to the deceased, has been arrested and that person is currently in custody.

“Lancashire Constabulary are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with the investigation and the University is working closely alongside them while their investigations continue. 

“The wellbeing and safety of our students and staff is our priority. Support is being offered to anyone within our university community who is affected by this devasting incident and our thoughts are very much with loved ones, friends, and all those who knew our student at this incredibly distressing time.
