The lives and legacy of the Bronte sisters will be explored in a new production at Chorley Theatre this month.

Underdog: The Other Other Bronte is a play by Sarah Gordon that takes an irreverent look at the life of the three sisters from Haworth and how they became publishing sensations in a male-dominated world.

Emily and Charlotte wrote the enduring romances Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre, but in this quick-witted drama youngest sister Anne takes centre stage to challenge her position as the forgotten ‘other’ Bronte.

Director Amber Walsh said: “Through sharp humour and a knowing look at how history picks its favourites, the play looks at sibling rivalry, creativity, and the erasure of women writers from history.

“This is not a story about well-behaved women, it’s about the power of words, love and jealousy.”

Rebecca Moran leads the cast as Anne, with Katie Potter as Charlotte and Rachel Kemp as Emily. A full supporting ensemble portray their brother Bramwell, the residents of Haworth, and the cream of London society.

Originally staged at the National Theatre, the play has been described as portraying the Brontes as bigger backstabbers than the Kardashians and won rave reviews. With Emerald Fennell’s new version of Wuthering Heights hitting cinemas there is no better time to discover the truth behind the stories.

Chorley Amateur Dramatic & Operatic Society (CADOS), who run Chorley Theatre, had a record 2025 with the best attendance in their 92-year history. This is the first CADOS Production of 2026, with Sister Act, Cluedo, and eight more shows on the way.

Underdog: The Other Other Bronte is at Chorley Theatre from Monday 23 to Saturday 28 February at 7.30pm. Priced at £12, tickets are available from the Chorley Theatre website.
