The 41-year-old allegedly broke into a unit block on St Neot Avenue in Potts Point yesterday morning and attacked two women from separate units in what police believe was a random attack.

Officers claim that when they confronted him, he lunged at police with a knife, resulting in a Taser being deployed.

Police claim the Taser was "ineffective", and a single round was fired at the 41-year-old.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is believed Lin barricaded himself inside one of the apartments during the 10-minute ordeal and did not know either of the victims.

One of the women had injuries suspected to be from a stabbing, while the other suffered blunt force trauma.

Both women, aged 48 and 56, suffered wounds to their heads and faces and have been taken to St Vincent's Hospital in a stable condition.

A critical incident has since been declared to investigate the actions of the officers.
