Guy Ritchie’s ‘Young Sherlock’ is exactly what you’d expect from a Guy Ritchie show. Sherlock’s a smug, smart alec, while everyone else is either an uptight, well-born or a working-class ruffian. Throw in quick quips, slow motion, underworld hijinks, and over-the-top violence, and you’ve got a recipe for the Guy Richiest thing yet.
But while ‘Young Sherlock’ follows a 19-year-old version of the future master detective at Oxford University (with several iconic locations used), the Prime Video series spent a lot of time filming in the South West and Wales (as well as in Spain, apparently), with Bristol often standing in for Victorian London and Oxford.
Where in Bristol features as a filming location for ‘Young Sherlock’?
Bristol’s Queen Square was transformed into the iconic Baker Street, where Sherlock’s brother Mycroft currently lives, while the interiors for the home were shot at The Georgian House Museum (the museum’s exterior was also used for a house on ‘Cowley Street’).
Elsewhere in the series, Bristol Cathedral was used as an Oxford concert hall, while Underfall Yard became a blacksmith’s workshop for one of Guy Ritchie’s signature high-speed action scenes. Broad Street and Small Street were also dressed as bustling Victorian London shopping streets during ‘Young Sherlock’.
Anywhere else nearby to Bristol?

In Somerset, Shepton Mallet Prison doubled as London’s notorious Newgate Prison in the very first episode. While over in Wales, Cardiff’s Civic Centre became the Foreign Office in London, and the Great Point Studios served as the main production base for interior sets.
Further afield, Bannau Brycheiniog (aka Brecon Beacons) was turned into a Chinese village, while Llanvihangel Court (near Abergevenney) served as Appleton Manor, the Holmes family’s ancestral home, and The Rolls of Monmouth became the infamous Beechworth Asylum, where Sherlock’s mother, Cordelia Holmes, is.
What is ‘Young Sherlock’?
Inspired by Andrew Lane’s ‘Young Sherlock Holmes’ book series, itself a pastiche of Arthur Conan Doyle’s original Sherlock Holmes stories, the mystery television series follows a raw and unfiltered Sherlock Holmes setting out to solve his first murder mystery: A murder at Oxford that leads to a global-level conspiracy.
‘Young Sherlock’ is streaming now on Amazon Prime Video.
