It’s a particularly big week for live music around Preston, with several venues hosting tribute acts and newcomers across multiple days.
On the other end of the spectrum, there are also wonderful networking and community events available, as well as some guided workshops and discussions around history, heritage, and even getting into foster care.
Read on for some of the highlights for the coming week, starting Tuesday 17 March, with links to our event listings. And if you’re an organiser or venue, make sure you submit your event to quickly and easily put it in front of the people of Preston.
Tuesday 17 March
St Patrick’s Day in the Snug with Nick Spencer
The Continental
Nick Spencer will be playing a free live show at The Continental to mark St. Patrick’s Day, with a range of pub classics and songs perfect to sing along to.
Wednesday 18 March
Heritage and History in Practice
Livesey House, University of Lancashire
Dr. Brandon Taylorian is hosting a series of free hands-on workshops for people with an interest in history and heritage. Anyone is welcome to attend and engage to the level they feel comfortable with, but registration is required.
Thursday 19 March
Preston Freelancer Meet-Up: March
Society1
Soceity1 hosts regular meet-ups for freelancers, entrepreneurs, and those who work from home alike. The event is a relaxed opportunity to network with other skilled individuals and build connections over tea, coffee, and pastries.
Discover Fostering- Make a Difference
Online
If you’ve ever considered fostering, this online session aims to help answer any questions and give vital information about fostering and how you can get involved if that is what you choose to do. It’s not exclusively for those who have made up their minds, and anyone is welcome.
The Ferret
A free evening with live musical performances at The Ferret, with the groups boasting eclectic and alternative sounds. Ages 14+ welcome (Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult).
Vinyl Tap
Lee D Barnes is travelling from Halifax to share three of his short films, with each having been showcased at various film festivals. The films playing on the evening are “Where the Noise Ends”, “It Lives Somewhere”, and “I’m in my 30’s and I Still Live with my Imaginary Friend”.
Friday 20 March
Chew’s Yard
John and Karen from CJ’s Line Dancing are back at Chew’s Yard for another class and social event. Enjoy a night of contemporary country charm and what promises to be a fun night.
The Ferret
A UK-based tribute act for The Stone Roses, playing some of their greatest hits and delivering a show-stopping performance. Ages 14+ welcome (Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult).
Fell Out Boy and Dookie (Fall Out Boy and Green Day tributes)
53 Degrees
53 Degrees is putting on a total emo rock night with not just one but two tribute acts for some of the most notable acts in the genre. Playing back-to-back, the nostalgia is sure to hit hard with this one.
Saturday 21 March
Plungington Community Centre
Caritas Care is hosting a free community event with tea and cake, though please be mindful that donations are encouraged.
Brother and sister duo Kindred
Chew’s Yard
Pete and Nikki frequently host open-mic nights around Preston and perform together as Kindred. Their set includes well-known songs, and all are welcome to come and enjoy an evening of music and laughter.
Cut (Italy) + Pete Bentham & The Dinner Ladies + Pageant Mum
The Ferret
Three different musical acts all jammed into one brilliant evening at The Ferret.
53 Degrees
The Southmartins are seasoned veterans in the music space now in their 16th year of performing. A tribute act combining the music of The Beautiful South and the Housemartins.
The Continental
Bruce Springsteen’s “Nebraska” album never got a tour, but Sean Keefe has seen to putting that right with his expert solo acoustic performance that seeks to deliver “the show that never was”.
Sunday 22 March
Lancashire FA Leyland
For fans of sport, the All Sports Memorabilia Fair offers a free event where you can get up close and personal with some iconic pieces.
Samlesbury Hall
This beautiful wedding venue is once again hosting an open day for all newly engaged couples to get familiar with the venue, a host of suppliers, and help prepare for the big day.
Cinema Picks
Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man
The Arc Cinema
Peaky Blinders has been a huge hit series for Netflix, but now, as the story comes to a close, this milestone event in the story is set to appear on the big screen. Across the UK, there are only a handful of theaters playing the film, and The Arc Cinema Preston is part of that two-week exclusive window before the film arrives on Netflix.
Screen Unseen
Odeon
On a regular basis, Odeon hosts a special preview screening of a film due to release in the days and weeks following. It’s a great chance to see incredible new films before anyone else, and particularly popular among film enthusiasts.
National Theatre Live: The Audience
Vue
Helen Mirren stars in this stage play from 2013 that inspired the series, The Crown. The show focuses on the private weekly meetings held between the Queen and the sitting Prime Minister, and spans decades as it seeks to provide an inside look at what could have transpired.
