  • Immersive yoga sessions inspired by Vincent van Gogh are coming to Newcastle this July
  • Classes will take place inside a large-scale digital art exhibition at Utilita Arena
  • Open to all abilities, sessions combine gentle movement with projected artworks
  • Participants can explore the full exhibition after each class

A series of immersive yoga sessions is set to bring a different pace to Newcastle this summer, placing participants inside a moving landscape of colour, sound and light inspired by Vincent van Gogh.

Hosted within Beyond Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience at Utilita Arena Newcastle, the sessions offer a quieter way to experience one of the city’s largest touring exhibitions. Early morning classes are scheduled for 18 and 19 July, with further dates expected.

A slower way into a busy exhibition

Rather than moving through the installation as a visitor, participants will remain within the space as it shifts around them. The exhibition uses large-scale projections to animate more than 300 works, including well-known pieces such as The Starry Night, Sunflowers and Café Terrace at Night.

During the 50-minute sessions, the focus is on gentle movement, breathwork and stillness. The changing visuals are not simply a backdrop but form part of the atmosphere, encouraging a more reflective experience than a standard class or exhibition visit.

The format also shifts the relationship between audience and artwork. Instead of observing paintings at a distance, participants are surrounded by them, with colour and motion extending across walls and floors.

Wellbeing meets digital culture

Immersive exhibitions have become increasingly common across the UK, but pairing them with guided wellness sessions remains relatively new. The Newcastle programme reflects a broader interest in experiences that combine cultural engagement with mental and physical wellbeing.

After each class, attendees can explore the full exhibition, including a dedicated reflection space designed around Van Gogh’s recurring sunflower motifs. The extended access allows for a more unhurried visit, in contrast to peak-time entry slots.

The wider exhibition runs from 12 July to 9 August, transforming the arena into a temporary digital gallery. Alongside the yoga sessions, organisers expect the event to draw visitors into the city centre during the summer period, particularly in the mornings and off-peak hours.
