I’m sure you’re all well aware that the weather in Bristol is outrageously sporadic and wildly unreliable. One moment, the sun has firmly got its hat on, and the next moment it’s absolutely nowhere to be seen. And so the moment that the big shiny thing in the sky decides to grace us with its presence, we certainly want to be making the most out of it. So it’s pretty darn handy for us sun-seeking Bristolians that a rather revolutionary map has come along to solve the struggle of searching for a sun-soaked spot in Bristol. Please allow us to introduce you to SunSeekr.
The SunSeekr map
SunSeekr is a game-changing app that tracks the city’s sunlight in real time. Created by architect Mo Dawod, the map makes choosing where to head for your springtime socialising a whole lot easier. Taking into account the position of the sun and the height of the surrounding buildings of each Bristol beer garden and al-fresco eatery, the map details which spots are basking in the sunlight and which are hidden in the shade throughout the day. In real time. This really is the future, folks.
The idea was originally unveiled on Reddit last year. Mo Dawod explained that the map used shadow simulation, MapBox navigation software and OpenStreetMap data to do its (extremely high-tech) thing. It first focused on cafes, but – let’s face it – this is Bristol, and so it certainly wasn’t long before it inevitably added beer gardens to the map.
The map is interactive, so you can see the city’s plethora of pubs in real time, but you can also set a specific time to see when your favourite places tend to catch the rays and to ensure you’re selecting the most perfectly perched pub for sipping in the sunshine.
