When will UK passport application fees increase?

Changes to passport application charges are expected to be introduced on 8 April, subject to approval from Parliament.

Why are passport application fees increasing?

The Home Office has said the 8% increase will help it “move towards a system that meets its costs through those who use it” and rely less on taxpayers.

The government does not make a profit from the cost of passport applications. The Home Office said the proposed fees “contribute to the cost of processing passport applications, consular support overseas, including for lost or stolen passports, and the cost of processing British citizens at UK borders”.

How to apply for a UK passport

The Home Office has advised customers to apply in good time before travelling. The standard passport renewal process normally take up to three weeks in the UK, if all the information requested is provided.
