Top marks were awarded across the board as a Bedlington secondary school was rated ‘Outstanding’ in its latest Catholic Schools Inspection.
St Benet Biscop Catholic Academy received the highest grade in every category, with inspectors praising its “exceptional commitment” to its Catholic mission, religious education, collective worship and the overall wellbeing of its students.
The inspectors also praised the school’s dedication to “fostering a nurturing, spiritually enriching environment for students and staff”, and commended St Benet Biscop for its “deep-rooted Catholic ethos” and integral ‘RISE’ values of ‘Respect’, ‘Resilience’, Integrity’, ‘Service’, and ‘Excellence’.
The report stated that Headteacher Suzanne Lewis-Dale had implemented a “clear, transformational vision” for the school’s Catholic life and mission, which is reflected in the everyday practices and culture of the school”, and described Religious Education lessons at St Benet Biscop as “creative, engaging, and inspiring”.

Extracurricular activities were also singled out by the inspectors, who noted:
“The school provides a wide range of enrichment opportunities for both students and staff, such as Chaplaincy Club, Just Dance, and Warhammer Society. These activities are designed to support the spiritual, social, and personal development of all members of the school community.”
In addition, honourable mention went to the culture of “inclusivity and respect” at St Benet Biscop, where students of all faiths and backgrounds feel “valued, welcome, and cared for”, and “proud to belong”.
During the two-day inspection, the team visited lessons, assemblies, form rooms, and enrichment clubs, and carried out student, staff, and parent surveys at St Benet Biscop, which is a member of the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust.
“We are absolutely delighted with the outcome of the inspection, and we are incredibly proud of our students and staff,” said Mrs Lewis-Dale.
“Our success is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and passion of everyone in our school community.
“We are committed to continuing to inspire and support our students to live out our Catholic values in every aspect of their lives.”
