Milk cartons and tetra packs are now accepted in Preston’s yellow-lid recycling bins.

Preston City Council has confirmed juice, milk and soup cartons which often come in tetra packs can now be put in yellow-lid bins and boxes.

It’s one of a number of bin changes brought in as the city aims to up the volume of recycling – with food waste collections starting on Monday 20 April and batteries also being able to be recycled by placing them in a clear bag on the lid of your black bin.

Yellow-lid recycling bins in the city are for plastic, glass and metal items.

What can go in yellow-lidded Preston bins

  • Aluminium tubes e.g tomato puree tubes (remove cap)
  • Biscuit and sweet tins (metal and plastic)
  • Car oil and antifreeze bottles (must be empty with lids tightly on)
  • Cartons/Tetra Paks
  • Co2 cartridges (laughing gas canisters)
  • Clean foil
  • Drinks cans
  • Empty aerosol cans
  • Food tins
  • Foil pie cases
  • Foil takeaway containers
  • Glass bottles
  • Glass jars
  • Hand gel bottles (must be rinsed as contents are flammable)
  • Makeup containers
  • Metal bottle caps/lids (off the jars)
  • Pet food tins
  • Plastic bottles (e.g. detergent, bleach, shampoo, milk, pop, yoghurt, medicine)
  • Plastic lids (either on or off the bottles)
  • Plastic tubs (e.g. margarine, ice cream, Christmas chocolates) – no film lids
  • Plastic pots (e.g. yoghurt, soup) – no film lids
  • Plastic trays /punnets (e.g. ready meals, meat trays, fruit /veg punnets) – no film lids or polystyrene trays
  • Plastic items with numbers ♻ 1(PET), ♻ 2 (HDPE) or ♻ 5 (PP)*
  • Plastic plant pots

What can’t go in the yellow-lidded Preston bins

  • Absorbent pads (from the bottom of plastic trays)
  • Batteries (this can cause fires when compacted in the wagons)
  • Crisp and sweet packets
  • Drinking glasses, plates or other ceramic items
  • Disposable coffee or takeaway drink cups
  • Electrical items
  • Film lids from plastic pots and trays
  • Hard plastics
  • Lighter fluid containers (or other flammable liquid containers)
  • Nappies
  • Paper / cardboard
  • Plastic bags / carrier bags (loose items only)
  • Plastic wrappers / cellophane
  • Polystyrene
  • Pots and pans or other scrap metal
  • Toys
  • Textiles / shoes*
