A former Booths store in Preston has opened as a Nisa convenience outlet.

The unit – on Woodplumpton Road, at Lane Ends in Ashton – was once reported to be the Lancashire supermarket firm’s most profitable branch after opening in 1963.

However, it closed down a decade ago and the building remained vacant until reopening as Luxe Interiors and Shutters in 2020.   But that business itself shut up shop in September 2023, once again leaving the single-storey premises empty.

Then signage appeared announcing that a Nisa store is “coming soon” to the busy suburban site, which lies close to the junction with Blackpool Road and Tulketh Brow. The store has since opened.

There is no record of a planning application having been submitted to Preston City Council for the latest conversion, but the nature of the new outlet means it will likely fall into the same planning use category as its predecessors – and so fresh approval will not be required from the local authority.

Nisa is the common brand shared by a network of more than 2,500 independently-owned retailers nationwide. The company functions as a groceries wholesaler, having been formed as the Northern Independent Supermarkets Association back in 1977.
