The Office of the Auditor-General at the Ekurhuleni Municipality says it is unable to find fraud and corruption-related matters against Ekurhuleni City Manager Kagiso Lerutla.
It says the arrest of Lerutla is a criminal offence matter related to a traffic incident in which a person died, not financial wrongdoing.
Mbongeni Malunga, Senior Manager in the AG’s office at the Ekurhuleni Municipality, was answering questions from members of Parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts on Tuesday.
Malunga says, “Chairperson in terms of the issues that are currently in the media, I mean the city manager and commission are going through is not something that we would have picked up from the audit process as far as I am aware chairperson, the city manager is in prison or has been incarcerated for a matter that is related to an incident that happened on the road on the N12 that related to one of the citizens losing their lives.”
On Tuesday, the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court granted Lerutla and suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi bail of R 30 000 each.
They are facing charges, including corruption, fraud and defeating the ends of justice.
The matter has been postponed to May 13.
