Amid ongoing exchanges of missile strikes and damage to infrastructure in Iran, Israel and several other countries of the Gulf region the downing by Iran of a US fighter jet adds an additional layer to this theatre of war.
Despite the US expressing its view that Iran’s military capacity had all but been decimated, Tehran continues to exert military and economic pressure of its own, including its hold on which ships may transit the Strait of Hormuz.
The capture of two American soldiers could be seen as a bargaining chip for the Iranian side moving forward and adds an additional stress test for everyone involved.
