Poseidon
The Titan ships stood leviathan at the foot of the terraced rows
That tilted towards the liners whose hulls eclipsed the sun,
Providing livelihoods for those living beneath the umbra,
Working down in the shipyards beneath these beached iron whales
That looked as if they were going to swallow the street,
Their immensity giving the impression they were moving towards you while standing still,
Towering with pride for the scale of an industry when it was ship shape
Before the cranes died off and became as rigid as Gormley’s angel.
