Royal Preston Hospital’s cancer centre and St Michael’s on Wyre church are set to benefit from money raised in memory of a much loved and respected former Stonyhurst College teacher.
Father-of-three Dr David Hallam died of cancer aged 71 last October. The former biology teacher at the Jesuit private school at Hurst Green, near Clitheroe, was initially told he had just months to live when first diagnosed with the disease in 2023.
Dr Hallam’s family set up an online fundraising page in tribute to him, with the funds raised divided between the Rosemere Cancer Foundation to fund a chemotherapy chair and St Michael’s on Wyre’s church bells and clock restoration fund.

Dr Hallam’s wife of over 45 years, Jan Hallam, said: “David was a truly remarkable man who not only brought joy and humour to his loved ones and many friends, but also had a lasting impact on the many students he taught and mentored throughout his teaching career.
“Following his diagnosis, David refused to let his cancer define him, even defying the odds to walk his daughter down the aisle in 2024 and also to celebrate one of his sons’ weddings a year later. Throughout his battle, David’s stoic attitude meant that he never gave up or complained and always looked forward to the next milestone.
“The two causes we are supporting were close to David’s heart. For two and a half years, Rosemere Cancer Centre provided David with unwavering care and support. He regularly spoke about the compassion and professionalism shown by all members of staff.”

Jan, who is also donating a print of the stepping stones across the River Hodder at The Inn at Whitewell – one of David’s favourite views – for display in the centre’s chemotherapy day unit at Preston.
Rosemere Cancer Foundation works to bring world class cancer treatments and services to cancer patients from throughout Lancashire and South Cumbria being treated not only at Rosemere Cancer Centre, which is the region’s specialist cancer treatment and radiotherapy centre at the Royal Preston Hospital, but also at another eight local hospital cancer units across the two counties.
