Lumo has unveiled its first refurbished train ahead of launching a new ‘affordable’ West Coast rail service that will stop in Preston.
The operator confirmed the service will begin running from 9 June, with tickets already on sale and fares from £23.90 between Preston and London.
The newly updated trains, part of Lumo’s Class 222 fleet, are being refurbished at Alstom’s facility in Widnes, with upgrades including refreshed interiors, improved seating, and enhanced wi-fi for passengers.

Some carriages will feature new seats in grey and silver tones, while the operator continues its single-class model, aiming to provide a consistent experience for all travellers.
The trains will run on the West Coast Main Line, stopping at key stations including Preston, London Euston, Crewe, Carlisle and Stirling.

New route and fares
The new service is designed to offer affordable, cross-border rail travel. Introductory fares include:
- London to Preston from £23.90
- Preston to Stirling from £14.90
- London to Stirling from £29.90
Lumo says cheaper fares are available when booking directly through its website.
Stuart Jones, Managing Director of First Rail Open Access, described the reveal as a key step ahead of launch.
He said: “This is a real milestone as we prepare to launch our new West Coast service this spring. The refurbished trains are certainly eye-catching with our signature Lumo blue.
“I’m also proud of the updated interiors that are ready to provide the comfortable service that we’re renowned for.”
The operator already runs services on the East Coast Main Line and has built a reputation for low fares and customer satisfaction.
The new West Coast route is expected to increase options for connections between Preston and destinations across England and Scotland.
