Suspended Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department Deputy Chief, Brigadier Julius Mkhwanazi, is expected to appear before the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Mkhwanazi was arrested on Saturday by the SAPS Madlanga Task Team.
He will appear alongside another senior municipal official who was arrested on Sunday morning in Johannesburg. Both face charges of fraud, corruption, and defeating or obstructing the ends of justice.
Mkhwanazi’s arrest comes shortly after he spent several days on the stand at the Madlanga Commission in Pretoria where his alleged dealings with suspected criminal cartel member Vusumuzi “Cat” Matlala came under scrutiny.
Julius Mkhwanazi first made headlines in the blue lights’ saga. The police watchdog, IPID, found he was allegedly central to fitting blue lights on vehicles linked to Vusumuzi “Cat” Matlala, who faces criminal charges.
Testimony by the late Marius van der Merwe – also known as Witness D before the Madlanga Commission – added claims of a cover-up tied to a 2022 case, when Emmanuel Mbense’s body was reportedly dumped in a river.
Police insist the arrests are not connected to the IPID probe or evidence before the commission.
