You can turn 8 days of annual leave into 20 days off in May – here’s how

We city-dwellers aren’t particularly well-known for being the chirpiest bunch of people, are we? And regardless of the fact that I think the residents of Bristol are given a bit of a bad rap, there are three little words that are guaranteed to bring a smile to even the grumpiest of Bristolians’ faces. Those three words, I hear you ask? Bank holiday weekend, of course.

There really is nothing quite like the feeling of slamming your laptop shut, and knowing that it won’t need to be reopened again for at least three days. But what if I told you that next month, you can transform a mere 8 days of annual leave into a whopping 20 days off work. Yes, really.

If you wish to squeeze every last drop out of your annual leave allowance, May is a pretty great time to do so, because there’s not one, but two bank holidays next month. The first bank holiday falls on Monday, May 4 and the second will grace us with its presence on Monday, May 25. Now, I know what you’re thinking. How on earth does two bank holidays equate to 20 days off work? Well, my friends, please allow me to explain.

If you were to take the four days following each bank holiday Monday off as annual leave (May 5 – May 8 and May 26 – May 29), you’d be taking 8 days off in total (obviously) but getting two sets of 9 consecutive days off, when combined with the weekends either side. Throw in the weekend in the middle, and you’ve got yourself 20 days off in May in exchange for just 8 days of annual leave. Not bad, hey?

Of course, this only applies to full-time workers in England and Wales that don’t work weekends. If you’d rather not (or aren’t allowed to) spend the best part of a month away from your desk, you could opt to take just one of the weeks off, and still get a decent amount of bang for your buck.

If you book May 5 to May 8 as annual leave, you will still get 9 consecutive days off work. The same applies if you book annual leave from May 26 to May 29. If you’d rather not use any annual leave at all, Monday to Friday workers will still enjoy two 3-day weekends next month. And that in itself is pretty darn dreamy to think about, isn’t it?
