The City of Johannesburg Emergency Services (EMS) says it will intensify fire safety awareness campaigns across informal settlements following a rise in deadly fire incidents during the winter season.

EMS says several fires have resulted in loss of life, destruction of property and left many families vulnerable. Public education teams will be deployed across all seven regions of the city, including shopping malls, to equip residents with emergency safety skills.

EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi, has urged residents to remain fire wise this winter. “For any life-threatening emergencies, residents are encouraged to contact the emergency management services command and control centre on 011 375 5911. Let us all be fire-wise during this winter.”
