Residents of Kariega in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in the Eastern Cape are struggling to deal with the impact of the recent severe weather conditions.

Heavy rains caused floods in the region two weeks ago, leaving critical infrastructure damaged when rivers burst their banks, and roads were flooded.

Mopping up operations are continuing.

Many residents are frustrated that the disruption of the delivery of basic services is prolonged

The municipality has not provided an electricity restoration timeframe.

Spokesperson Sithembiso Soyaya says water supply to affected areas should be restored by next week.

He says, “We fully understand the frustrations of residents. However, it is equally important to appreciate the scale of infrastructure damage caused by the flooding, including damage to electricity poles, power lines and other critical infrastructure. Restoration work requires specialised technical teams, safety assessments and coordinated interventions across affected areas within the metro. The municipality remains committed to restoring services as quickly, safely and sustainably as possible. We are not implementing quick fixes but focusing on long-term infrastructure restoration and stabilisation.”
