Passengers travelling with Northern are being advised that some train timetables will change next week, with new Sunday services also being introduced between Whitby and Newcastle upon Tyne.
The changes will come into effect on Sunday 17 May, when rail timetables across the country are updated.
While most Northern services will remain the same, the operator has made adjustments to several routes in a bid to improve punctuality and respond to passenger feedback.
Two new Sunday services will be introduced in the North East, allowing passengers to travel between Whitby, Middlesbrough and Newcastle without changing trains.
There will also be some small tweaks to the timetables on other lines in the region.
In Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, trains running between Sheffield and Lincoln will call at all stations along the route on Sundays. The timings of most services running between Sheffield and Huddersfield will also be altered by a few minutes.
In the North West and Cumbria, most services will stay the same, with a few small timing changes to improve reliability.
There are several tools available to help customers plan their journeys:
- Northern app and website: Access real-time updates, purchase tickets, and receive notifications about service alterations.
- National Rail Enquiries journey planner: Check for timetable changes, engineering works and plan journeys.
It comes after Northern made a number of changes in December, as part of the last national timetable change, including the introduction of the new Yorkshire Flyer service between Leeds and Sheffield.
Sam MacDougall, Northern’s Operations Director, said:
“We’re tweaking and fine tuning a few services this month to improve reliability, after listening to feedback from passengers.
“We’re also introducing new Sunday services, which will run between Whitby and Newcastle and call at a range of destinations along the Durham Coast.
“There won’t be widespread changes, but the timings of some services will be altered by a few minutes so we’re advising passengers to check before they travel.”

Northern is the second largest train operator in the UK, with 2,650 services a day to more than 500 stations across the North of England.
