Stagecoach is celebrating the retirement of long-serving Newcastle bus driver Steve McCabe, who completed his final shift last week after 27 years of dedicated service.
Having worked from Stagecoach’s Walkergate depot for more than two decades, Steve became a familiar and respected figure among both colleagues and passengers while serving communities across Newcastle upon Tyne.
Steve, who celebrated his 66th birthday in April, originally worked in IT for the Inland Revenue before changing direction and moving into the bus industry in November 1988.
A proud Geordie and lifelong Newcastle United supporter, Steve has spent more than a quarter of a century helping keep the city moving while building strong friendships and earning the admiration of colleagues across the depot.
Carl Trodden, Operations Manager at Stagecoach Walkergate, said:
“Steve has been an incredibly valued member of the Walkergate team for many years and his retirement marks the end of an outstanding career.
“He’s been seen by many colleagues as a father figure around the depot and a stable influence amongst the driving team, with people regularly seeking out his wisdom, advice and support.
“Steve’s professionalism, calm approach and dedication to serving the people of Newcastle have made a lasting impact on everyone who has worked alongside him.
“On behalf of everyone at Stagecoach North East, we thank Steve for his tremendous service and wish him a long, happy and well-deserved retirement.”
