A charity volunteer from Newcastle upon Tyne who dedicated her free time to supporting local families while studying at university was honoured to attend this week’s Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace.
Lauren Marriott, 23, attended the event on Tuesday in recognition of her work with Action for Children, where she began volunteering in 2023. Representatives from the charity are invited to the Royal Garden Parties each year through its patron, Catherine, Princess of Wales.
After growing up in Northwich in Cheshire, Lauren began volunteering with Action for Children at Galafield Family Hub in Newcastle, one of more than 370 Action for Children services across the UK supporting vulnerable children, young people, and families. Lauren moved to the city to study a degree in psychology and masters in forensic psychology.
At Galafield, she helped run family clubs, fun days, parent and baby groups, play and learn sessions, as well as baby socials, and an activity week for local teenagers. She also supported Action for Children’s fundraising at the Great North Run and packed Christmas hampers for families in need.
Lauren and her mum Cheryl Edwards mingled with hundreds of guests at the garden party, which was held for those who make a positive impact in their communities.

Lauren said:
“It has been an absolute honour and privilege representing Action for Children at the garden party. Volunteering with the charity has given me endless opportunities to build my confidence both personally and professionally. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support from staff at Action for Children and hope to uphold their values in my future endeavours.”
Cheryl added:
“Lauren always finds time to give support to children that need help in life. She’s a truly special person and I’m so proud to be her mum.”
Kate Howarth, a Children’s Services Manager at Action for Children, said: “Lauren’s commitment, enthusiasm, and warmth make her a great example of what volunteering looks like in practice, and her contribution is highly valued. We are delighted to see her recognised in this way.”
Lauren now works full time in a hospital near Newcastle, which specialises in providing support for young people with complex health, behavioural and emotional needs.
