Police share urgent safety advice for families enjoying bank holiday sunshine

Families enjoying the sunshine across south Wales this bank holiday weekend are being urged to take extra care after a number of children were reported missing at busy beaches and parks.

According to South Wales Police, officers have dealt with several reports from worried parents and guardians as thousands flocked to popular outdoor spots during the warm weather.

Thankfully, all of the children reported missing have since been safely reunited with their families.

The force said the incidents had been “a distressing experience for all involved” and has now shared a series of safety tips to help parents avoid similar situations during family days out.

South Wales Police has shared the following advice for parents and guardians:

• Take a full body photo of each child before leaving the house so you have an up to date image if they become separated.
• Put a note with your phone number in your child’s pocket, or write your mobile number on their forearm using a permanent marker.
• Teach younger children to “stop and wait” if they realise they can no longer see you, making it easier to find them quickly.
• Tell children to only ask uniformed staff, police officers, PCSOs or another parent with children for help if they get lost.
• Choose a clear and obvious meeting point when you arrive, such as a statue, café or information desk.

The force also urged parents to contact police immediately if a child goes missing, especially at busy beaches, parks or attractions where officers and PCSOs may already be nearby.

South Wales Police added: “Remembering some of these simple tips can really help if your child does happen to lose you. Whatever your plans, enjoy your day out and stay safe.”

With warm weather expected to continue across parts of Wales over the bank holiday, families are being reminded to stay vigilant while making the most of the sunshine.
