Fettes College Strengthens Community Ties Through Engagement Day

Fettes College recently hosted its biannual Community Engagement Day on 8 May, reinforcing its commitment to local involvement and environmental stewardship. The independent school mobilised students to participate in a variety of initiatives across Edinburgh, ranging from environmental projects to educational support and care home visits.

Environmental Projects Across Edinburgh

A significant portion of the day’s activities focused on improving the city’s green spaces. Students collaborated with local primary schools and community groups to enhance several locations, including a Stockbridge roundabout in partnership with The Flora Stevenson Primary School and St Ninian’s Church. Additionally, efforts were made to clean the Water of Leith under the guidance of the Water of Leith Trust. Other sites benefiting from student involvement included Granton Community Gardeners, Starbank Park, and Inverleith Park.

Educational and Social Outreach

Fettes students extended their support to local nurseries and primary schools, such as Star of the Sea Primary School and Pirniehall Nursery. These visits involved hands-on teaching assistance and maintenance work, including support for a clothes bank. The school also welcomed young members of the FetLor Youth Club for team-building exercises, utilising facilities like the on-campus low ropes course. This engagement followed the club’s recent charity run, which raised over £16,500.

Arts and Music Contributions

Beyond environmental and educational efforts, students contributed to the cultural life of the community. They prepared and donated art packs to Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity and performed at local venues, including the LifeCare Centre, thereby enriching the social and artistic fabric of the area.

Open Doors at Fettes: Inviting the Community In

As part of the event, Fettes College opened the doors of its historic 19th-century Bryce Building to local residents. Visitors were offered morning coffee, opportunities to learn about the school’s history, and guided tours led by students. Attendance was limited, and interested parties were encouraged to register in advance.

Leadership Perspective

Helen Harrison, Head of Fettes College, emphasised the importance of these activities, stating, “Students at Fettes aim high and give back and our Community Engagement Days are a richly rewarding experience for everyone to come together and build on our local partnerships.” She highlighted the school’s dedication to fostering mutually beneficial relationships rooted in the Edinburgh community through a carefully developed programme.
