Residents and businesses in Edinburgh have until 1 July 2026 to have their say on proposals for a potential safer drug consumption facility in the Old Town.
A public consultation is currently underway, giving local people the opportunity to share their views on the plans. If approved, the facility would provide a supervised environment where individuals could consume drugs under the care of trained clinical professionals, with the aim of reducing harm and improving access to support services.
So far over 800 people have shared their views and two drop-in sessions have taken place, allowing people to find out more and ask any questions they may have.
A similar facility opened in Glasgow last year, and many cities around the world offer these services. They provide clean equipment, drug testing and access to support workers and clinical staff.
The consultation is an opportunity for people who live or work in the Old Town to share their views on the facility and shape how it could look. Groups including those with lived experience of addiction and families affected by drug use will also be consulted.
Feedback from the consultation will be used to develop a business case for the Scottish Government, which will make the final decision.
There is currently no confirmed site. However, research suggests the Old Town would benefit most, with the areas around the Cowgate and Spittal Street among possible locations.

Christine Laverty, Chief Officer of the Edinburgh Health and Social Care Partnership, said:
“Scotland continues to lose too many lives to drugs each year. Every drug death is a tragedy so we must keep exploring every possible way to reduce drug related harm.
“Evidence shows that safer drug consumption facilities can reduce drug-related harm and help prevent fatal overdoses. By offering a similar service in Edinburgh, we could provide a safer environment for people to use drugs they already have with support from trained clinical staff.
“We are asking people living or working in the Old Town area as well as those with living experience or lived experience to take part in the survey to share their views before 1 July.
“We are keen to hear from a wide range of people which will help us to shape any future case for a safer drug consumption facility in Edinburgh.”
