They say life begins at 50, but according to the medical experts at YourGP, cognitive function can start to deteriorate from age 45. So is forgetfulness and declining brain function just part and parcel of ageing? What can we do to slow down brain ageing? And how do we care for those whose memory, reasoning and comprehension skills are declining?

YourGP’s Medical Director, Dr Katie Cathrow, will be answering these key questions and more at two free Edinburgh events where anyone can come along to explore the topic of brain health, ask questions, and receive practical advice and guidance.

Taking place at YourGP’s Dundas Street practice on Sunday 28th June and Thursday 2nd July, Dr Cathrow will be joined by the elderly care experts from Home Instead. Together, they hope to empower people to take control of their brain health.

Commenting ahead of the events, Dr Cathrow said;

“Your brain is responsible for all your thoughts, emotions, memories, decisions, movements, speech, breathing and so much more. So when your brain health starts to decline, it can have a huge impact not just on you as an individual, but on your loved ones too.

“Research shows us there are various lifestyle changes we can make to help slow down the ageing of the brain. Things such as eating a healthy, balanced diet to ensure your brain is getting all the essential nutrients it needs for optimal functionality; exercising regularly to increase blood flow so those essential nutrients and oxygen can be delivered the brain; socialising often, because research shows that isolation can accelerate mental decline; and sleeping well, because we know tiredness can have a detrimental effect on cognitive function.

“Ahead of World Brain Day on 22nd July, I’ll be joining forces with Home Instead to host two events where we’ll be sharing more tips like this. Here anyone with concerns, either about their own brain health or that of a loved one, can come along, get advice and find out what support is available.”

Light refreshments and fizz will be provided at the events, alongside plenty of opportunities to listen, share experiences and ask questions. Attendees will also have the opportunity to book a complimentary 20-minute initial consultation worth £160 to discuss any aspect of brain health in more detail with one of YourGP’s experts.

The Care Conversations: Brain Health events will take place on Sunday 28th June, 1-3pm and Thursday 2nd July, 6:30-8pm at YourGP’s Dundas Street practice.

Tickets are free and available to reserve on Eventbrite at www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/care-conversations-brain-health-tickets-1991348923235.
