The Electoral Commission (IEC) says it has appointed 48 212 staff to ensure a smooth and efficient voter registration process.

The IEC’s first voter registration drive ahead of the upcoming Local Government Elections (LGE) in November is set to take place this Saturday and Sunday.

The country’s over 23 000 voting stations will be open from 8am until 5pm on both days.

Addressing the media in Centurion, Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo says, “Of the appointed staff members 37 000 are women, 10 000 are men. Furthermore, 22 000 members are under the age of 35, while 19 000 are between the ages of 36 and 50. The rest of the 5 800 staff members are aged 51 years and older. Significantly, 34 000 of the appointed staff members are unemployed yet qualified persons.”
