More buses transporting undocumented Malawian immigrants from Durban in KwaZulu-Natal have arrived at the Beitbridge Border Post in Musina, Limpopo.
Hundreds of people are currently undergoing processing by immigration authorities before being deported to Malawi.
Officials at the busy port of entry are conducting verification and repatriation procedures as part of the ongoing programme to facilitate the return of undocumented Malawian nationals.
Authorities say the process is being managed in coordination with law enforcement and immigration officials to ensure the orderly movement of those being repatriated.
One of the bus drivers, Mcebo Hlophe, says the journey has proceeded without incident and that law enforcement officers have been escorting the buses.
Hlophe says, “So far we haven’t experienced any challenges, and the people we are transporting are willing to go back home. Law enforcement officers have been escorting us to ensure safety. From here we’ll cross to Zimbabwe, and we will sleep at Nyamaphanda border because it closes at night, then from there we’ll cross to Malawi.”
The repatriation process forms part of efforts by authorities to return undocumented Malawian nationals to their home country following recent immigration enforcement measures. Reporting by Vutivi Maluleke
