A man is to paddle from Preston to Tewitfield on an inflatable duck to raise funds for veterans and forces’ families.

Liam Birkett is to start his trip with his giant inflatable duck on 27 July along the Lancaster Canal and cover a total of 35 miles. He will then walk the remaining distance to Kendal.

Ahead of his trip, he has named his duck, ‘Ducky McDuckface.’

Liam, from Lancaster, said this idea came to  him randomly and said: “I’d been thinking about doing something for charity this year and wanted it to be memorable.

“I was sitting on the sofa one evening and said, “What about paddling a giant inflatable duck down the Lancaster Canal?”

“I’ve seen people do charity challenges on bikes, paddleboards and kayaks. I thought I’d do something a little different. Whether that’s bravery or stupidity remains to be seen.”

Liam, who works as a Rough Sleep Navigator, said the charity Healthier Heroes is close to his heart.

He added:  I’ve seen some of the challenges people can face, and I’ve also got family and friends who are serving in the Armed Forces, as well as veterans.

“They’re a fantastic organisation doing great work, so when I decided to do something completely ridiculous, they seemed like the perfect charity to do it for.”
