Newtongrange Primary School Celebrates Prestigious Gold Sport Award

Newtongrange Primary School has been officially recognised for placing sport at the centre of its planning, practice and ethos, while creating clear pathways to encourage lifelong participation.

To achieve this prestigious gold award, teachers and pupils worked collaboratively to compile a robust action plan and provide evidence of their activities and initiatives. In response, the school received praise for its ongoing commitment to increase young people’s opportunities and engagement in physical education, school sport and leadership.

Pupils at the primary enjoyed jumping into a variety of team sports and individual events throughout the past year, including rugby union, football, hockey, basketball, dodgeball, cheerleading, dance, gymnastics, tennis and athletics.

63% of the school roll attended a sports-related club and more than 100 pupils took part in competitive tournaments and sports festivals throughout the year, many of whom would not have had the opportunity to do so otherwise. And 15 staff members enrolled in sports-related CLPL opportunities, cementing their commitment to supporting learners to reach their full sporting potential.

Speaking about the award, Head Teacher Laura Cameron said;

“Engaging in sport brings with it a wealth of benefits, not only in terms of physical health, but also mental well-being, confidence and emotional resilience. It also provides valuable opportunities to develop essential life skills such as teamwork, discipline and communication, and inspire healthy habits that last a lifetime. Therefore we here at Newtongrange Primary School believe it is essential that all pupils are given opportunities to try their hand at a variety of sports.

“It has been so rewarding to see a love of sport being ignited in so many of our learners this year, and we owe a huge thank you to teacher Mr Watters and class P6W who have taken the lead in helping our school reach this gold standard.”

After a restful summer break, pupils and teachers will return in August ready to begin another academic year packed with sporting activities, including making full use of the facilities on offer at the nearby Newtongrange Star Football Club grounds, where it is hoped even more pupils will be inspired to reach their sporting goals.
