A musician from Perth has embarked on an unusual cross-country adventure across the United States, relying largely on the kindness of strangers as he makes his way to Scotland’s opening World Cup match.
Logan Gilmartin set out from San Francisco with the aim of reaching Boston in time to watch Scotland take on Haiti in their first game of the tournament. By the time he arrives, he will have travelled more than 3,000 miles.
The journey is also helping to raise awareness and funds for The Psoriasis Association, a charity supporting people affected by the skin condition. Logan has already raised close to his initial £1,000 fundraising target.
Speaking about the challenge, Logan said:
“I have psoriasis myself and I know what it’s like to wake up and feel a bit embarrassed and down about my skin, so I want to raise money to make sure The Psoriasis Association can continue doing the amazing work they do. I also want to inspire other people with the condition to be confident, and show that there are ways to manage psoriasis and have a good quality of life.”
Along the way, Logan has relied on a mixture of determination, creativity and the generosity of others.
“To make sure I made it to Boston in time, I decided to perform at an open mic night. Lots of people kindly gave me some spare change – enough to get a 60-hour bus to Washington D.C! From there, I’m hoping to hitchhike the rest of the way to Boston with a fellow Scottish football fan.
“It has been a challenge to rely mainly on the kindness of strangers, but I wanted to shine a positive light and show the world there are still some good people out there.”
The Psoriasis Association relies on fundraising support to operate its free helpline, raise awareness of the condition and support research into psoriasis and related conditions.
The charity says donations help fund research projects aimed at improving understanding and treatment of psoriasis, while also supporting people living with the condition across the UK.
Logan’s challenge has attracted attention from supporters following his progress across America, with many backing both his fundraising efforts and his determination to reach Scotland’s World Cup match in Boston.
