A local Preston company has celebrated the success of two apprentices as it marks its eighth decade in business.
Thompson Building Services Engineers in Ashton-on-Ribble recognised Liam Rufus, a 22-year-old from Preston, who received the North West National Rising Star award this month.
Former Our Lady’s Catholic High School and Cardinal Newman College student, Liam was said to have impressed the judging panel with his technical ability and professionalism.

Stuart Thompson, managing director, said: “Liam’s success in winning the JTL National Rising Star Award is a proud moment for everyone at Thompsons.
“This award is thoroughly deserved and reflects not only his individual talent and hard work but also the value of investing in young people and developing the next generation of skilled professionals.”
He continued: “Liam is a fantastic ambassador for Thompsons, for apprenticeships and for the electrical industry, and we couldn’t be more pleased to see him receive this national recognition.
“As we celebrate 80 years in business, achievements like this are a reminder that our future is being shaped by talented young people coming through the industry. Supporting apprentices has always been an important part of who we are.”
The company also celebrated the achievements of Billy Coxhead, 19, from Leyland, a third-year electrical apprentice.
Billy recently competed in the SkillELECTRIC National Qualifying Heat in Preston in May, where he was named first runner-up.
Taking on challenging practical tests, Billy now waits to see it his scores will take him to the national finals in London in November.
Speaking about the challenge, Billy said: “I’m incredibly proud to have competed in the Skill Electric competition and grateful to both my company and college for allowing me to take part.
“It pushed me well outside my comfort zone, but I really enjoyed the challenge and the chance to develop my skills and confidence throughout the experience.”
