Two site managers from the division, which is based in Gateshead, were announced as winners in the National House Building Council’s (NHBC) 2026 Pride in the Job Quality Awards.
They are Bobby Atkinson at Western Grange in Killingworth, and Dave Mcathey at Centurion Chase in Wallsend.
Bobby, 32, from South Shields, has worked with Bellway for over three years, and has been on site at Western Grange since construction began in 2024. This is the first Quality Award win of his career.
He said:
“When I heard about my Quality Award win, I couldn’t believe it. It’s not an easy job, and being recognised for all the hard work feels good.
“I’ve put in long hours at this site – I’m the first one in and last one to leave – but I would do eight days a week if I could to make it a success. We have a great team who have the same work ethic and buy into what we want to achieve. It’s a lovely site too with lots of green land surrounding it. I’d be very happy to move in myself!
“We want to build good houses for the customers. When you see them arrive on move-in day, you appreciate that they might have spent their life savings on their new home. To know that we’ve done the best job we can for them is the real reward – though a Quality Award is a great bonus!”

Dave, 44, also from South Shields, is celebrating his second Quality Award in two years.
He said:
“It feels fantastic to win for the second time. Last year I said I’d keep working hard, keep improving, and it’s paid off. It’s a real achievement and reflects the efforts of the whole team on site.”
The awards, which are now in their 45th year, are among the most highly-prized in the housebuilding industry, with only 449 from over 7,500 site managers inspected by the NHBC selected for the honour.
Judging for the awards is a rigorous process which encompasses every aspect of a site manager’s responsibilities, including consistency, attention to detail, leadership, interpretation of drawings and specifications, technical expertise and health and safety. Spot checks are also carried out on the day-to-day running of the site.
The successful site managers will now go on to be judged in the next round of the competition – the Seal of Excellence and Regional Awards – which will be announced in the autumn.
Ben Singlewood, Head of Construction for Bellway North East, said:
“Huge congratulations to our successful site managers who have won Pride in the Job Quality Awards this year.
“They have both shown absolute dedication to meeting the rigorous standards required by the NHBC judges and have also inspired their site teams to share the Pride in the Job ethos, which is vital to achieve this award.
“As a company we have targeted the Pride in the Job Awards as part of our strategic focus on quality, with best practice and expertise shared across the business.
“Bobby and Dave have been part of helping to create a culture in which our construction teams consistently build homes they would be proud to call their own. We hope their continued commitment to excellence will enable them to achieve even greater success in the next stage of the competition.”
