Nus Duo is formed by Spanish musicians Alba Vinti (flute) and Inés del Río (guitar)

An intimate performance inspired by the Spanish tradition of lingering around the table after a meal will make its UK premiere at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this August.

Sobremesa: Where Words and Music Meet at the Table, created by Spanish musicians Nus Duo, will run at Alba Flamenca from 12 to 16 August.

The production takes its name from sobremesa, the tradition of staying at the table after eating to talk, reflect and enjoy one another’s company. Nus Duo brings that idea into the theatre, inviting audiences to help shape a different combination of literature and live music at every performance.

Rather than following a fixed programme, guests choose from a menu of texts presented as a series of literary “courses”. Each selection is then paired with an unexpected musical response, creating a live conversation between words and sound.

The featured writing draws on Spanish and Latin American authors including Federico García Lorca, Julio Cortázar, Rosalía de Castro and Gloria Fuertes.

Their work is placed alongside music spanning four centuries, from Baroque dances and flamenco to contemporary compositions. The result is a performance in which different periods, cultures and artistic traditions meet in new and often surprising ways.

Because the audience determines which texts are selected, no two performances will follow exactly the same path.

The interactive format is designed to encourage close listening and shared discovery, offering a quieter and more reflective experience amid the Edinburgh Fringe’s famously busy programme.

The gathering will also continue after the final piece. Audience members will be invited to remain in the venue, share their responses and continue the conversation in the spirit of a traditional sobremesa.

Nus Duo is formed by flautist Alba Vinti and guitarist Inés del Río.

Edinburgh-based Vinti performs with orchestras across the UK and Europe and is involved in music education and creative learning projects throughout Scotland.

Del Río specialises in guitar and plucked string instruments from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Her work also encompasses classical, early and traditional music, and she is an award-winning performer and educator.

Together, the musicians create performances that connect music with literature and other creative disciplines, placing participation, reflection and shared experience at the centre of their work.
