The M6 was closed northbound at Preston while emergency services responded to a multi-vehicle crash.
Emergency services were called to the M6 northbound between junction 31 and junction 31a at around midday on Thursday (30 July).
There had been a multi-vehicle crash that requires the road to be closed due to the carriageway being obstructed.
There were long delays on both the M6 and M61 heading northbound as a result of the crash.
A spokesperson for police said: “The northbound M6 motorway is currently closed across all three lanes at J31 due to a road traffic collision.
“As a result, traffic is building up, so if you don’t need to travel yet, we’d advise waiting until we let you know it’s back open.
“We’ll keep you updated and let you know when it’s open for travel.”
