An investigation is underway after two people died in a crash involving a HGV.
Emergency services were called to Hall Lane at Wrightington, close to the hospital, just after 8am on Thursday (9 July).
The VW Golf, which was travelling east towards junction 27 for the M6, appears to have failed to negotiate a bend and crossed into the path of the HGV on the opposite carriageway, police said.

The driver of the Golf, a man in his 70s, and the passenger, a woman in her 60s, suffered serious injuries and died.
The driver of the HGV is being treated as a witness.
The road was closed in the aftermath of the incident with long delays for anyone using the M6.
Sgt Martin Wilcock, of Lancashire Constabulary, said: “Very sadly this collision has resulted in two people losing their lives and my thoughts are with their loved ones. I would appeal to anyone who saw what happened and who has not yet spoken with police, or anyone with footage such as dashcam, CCTV or Ring doorbell to get in touch.
“I would also like to speak to anyone who saw the VW Golf driving in the moments before the collision.”
