North East Businesses Unite to Support NE Youth at Charity Clay Pigeon Shoot

The annual fundraiser for the youth development charity featured two separate events at Hulne Priory in Alnwick at the end June.

The Corporate Clay Pigeon Shoot, which took place on Friday 26th June, saw 34 teams from local businesses and other organisations compete for victory – including two teams from the main sponsor Bellway. The day raised more than £54,000.

And on Sunday 28th June, 25 teams of experienced shooters took part in the John Shallcross Memorial Clay Pigeon Shoot, named in honour of a legend of the charity, raising £15,000 on the day.

Jon Niblo, CEO of NE Youth, said:

“Our annual clay pigeon shoot is a tradition which has been going for over 40 years. We launched the corporate shoot about 10 years ago to enable us to reconnect with several local businesses while also continuing the traditional shoot and that has really elevated the event.

“There’s always a great spirit of camaraderie and friendly rivalry between the teams, and this year was no different. It was wonderful to have so many teams taking part, and we are delighted to have raised more than £69,000 over the two days.

Considering the current economic climate, we are extremely pleased to have made a profit of more than £69,000. While we didn’t quite match last year’s outstanding result, we’re incredibly proud of what was achieved. I’d like to thank everyone who helped make it possible.”

“The money raised from this event supports the core running of the charity, enabling us to deliver projects which have a meaningful impact on the lives of young people across the North East. We provide support to youth and community organisations as well as focusing on direct work with young people who are at most risk and most disadvantaged, helping them to develop life skills and build resilience while also improving health and employment outcomes.

“We are operating in a landscape where there is minimal local authority funding for youth services so the charitable sector has to be more resilient and look to its own funding and income generation to ensure that community grassroots services for young people can continue.

“The annual clay pigeon shoot is one of our biggest fundraising events and we are incredibly fortunate that we have developed strong relationships with local businesses who have been extremely loyal to the charity over the years. Bellway has supported the event in the past so it is great to have re-established that connection by having them as the main sponsor of our corporate shoot this year.”

National housebuilder Bellway began as a family business in the North East in 1946 and is headquartered in Newcastle. Its North East division, which is based in Gateshead, builds new homes across Tyne and Wear, Northumberland and County Durham.

Stuart Morgan, Land Director for Bellway North East, said:

“As a business which has its roots firmly in the North East, we are proud to support an organisation like NE Youth which is doing such important work to improve the life chances of vulnerable and disadvantaged young people across the region.

“The charity’s values align very closely with Bellway’s ethos as a company which is committed to supporting local communities, as well as our inclusive approach to staff recruitment and development which is guided by the belief that people from all backgrounds should be given the opportunity to achieve their potential.

“The charity’s clay pigeon shoot is a great event to take part in and our team had a very enjoyable day on the range helping to raise money for a wonderful cause.”
