The Year 6 cohort from St Catherine’s Catholic Primary School tested their mettle with a series of challenges which ranged from hiking to canoeing.
Class Teacher Rachael Murray accompanied the group, and was impressed by the children’s courage and determination – as well as their behaviour towards one another.
“Our Year 6 pupils enjoyed an unforgettable, action-packed week, challenging themselves, supporting one another, and making memories that will last a lifetime,” she said.
“From the moment they arrived, they threw themselves into every opportunity. The week began with a challenging scramble to the Top of Todd Crag, followed by an incredible range of activities, including canoeing on Lake Windermere, jetty jumping, high challenges, ghyll scrambling, and a full day of hiking.
“One of the highlights was a fantastic hike to the 335-metre summit of Loughrigg Fell, continuing across the peaks and back via Todd Crag to Brathay. The children covered more than 16 kilometres and 24,000 steps in one day, while still managing a trip to Grasmere to enjoy some of its world-famous gingerbread.”
The trip is an annual high point in the calendar at St Catherine’s, which is a member of the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust.
Ms Murray continued:
“While their courage and determination were incredible to see, what made the week truly special was the way the children looked after one another. They constantly encouraged their friends, celebrated each other’s successes, and showed remarkable teamwork, resilience, and kindness.
“Brathay staff commented on just how caring and supportive the group were, even telling us that St Catherine’s was the best school they had hosted for looking after one another.”
She added:
“As a school, we could not be prouder of them. They embraced every challenge, stepped outside their comfort zones, and truly lived out our SHINE [Serve, be Honest, Inspire, Nurture relationships, and Embrace differences] values throughout the week.
“It was a wonderful reminder of what makes our children so special, and a residential that pupils and staff will never forget.”
