Visitors are once again being invited to climb St Walburge’s iconic spire, while also seeing the latest restoration work taking place at one of Preston’s most recognisable landmarks.
The church will open its doors for spire climbs on Saturday 8, Saturday 22 and Saturday 29 August, with access available from 1pm to 5pm.
Standing at 309 feet (94 metres) high, St Walburge’s spire is the third tallest in the UK and the tallest on a parish church. Visitors who make the 172-step climb will be rewarded with views across Preston and beyond.
The climbs will also provide an opportunity to see the recently completed second phase of the church’s roof replacement project, along with the re-gilded IHS Christogram above the apse.

Following the climb, visitors can take part in guided tours of the church and explore a new exhibition featuring photographs, documents and memories from St Walburge’s archives.
Visitors will also be able to see restoration work inside the church, including the removal of the screen at the back of the building to reveal the pillars supporting the choir loft, as well as the reinstatement of the altar rails.
Spire climbs will take place in groups of up to 15 people every 45 minutes, with tickets costing £12. All proceeds will go towards phase three of the roof restoration project.
